Tropical Storm Irma

On Monday we had a visit from Tropical Storm Irma. We knew she was coming and had plenty of time to prepare because it was only a matter of when we would lose power, not if. We can lose power on windy days, so with 50-60 mph winds headed our direction we knew it was only a matter of time.

We lost power around 2pm on Monday and it returned Tuesday at 8pm. Needless to say it made an interesting couple of days. However, the best part, for me, is when I told the boys that since the power was out, there would be no internet. The looks on their faces was absolutely priceless when they put it all together that they couldn’t play the games they really wanted on their devices. I really wish I would have taken a picture when that happened.

After losing power on Monday and while it was super crazy windy, we spent time inside doing school, reading books and the boys played their devices for an hour once it was dark.

On Tuesday, we spent the morning doing school. However, once school was over I kicked the kids outside into the drizzly rain and had them help pick up the fallen limbs in the yard.

However, once school was over I kicked the kids outside into the drizzly rain and had them help pick up the fallen limbs in the yard.

Of course, picking up limbs wasn’t much fun so they also spent some time playing.

However, when they were bored with whatever they were playing outside, they came inside and played various games. Some games they played the “correct” way. Once that was boring, though, they would make up their own games with their own rules. Usually that resulted in them being sent back outside because they started fighting because someone kept changing the rules.

Let me say that aside from school they spent a lot more time outside than they did inside. At least outside I didn’t have to hear them fight.

We finally got power around 8pm, tonight.

One thing that I realized is that we need to have more time like this, where we are completely unplugged. Electricity would be ok, so we could have cold or warm food and lights, but otherwise no tv or devices. Oh, and showers, showers would be great also. I have seen these kids make up and play some crazy stuff the last couple of days. They are using their imaginations in ways they haven’t since they each got their own device. They have also been way more active, something that has drastically decreased lately.

Just the last few days Raising the Cameron Clan!
